Rinaldo (HWV 7) is an Italian opera by George Frideric Handel, now a part of the standard operatic repertoire. The Italian libretto was written by Giacomo Rossi based on episodes of Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata ("Jerusalem Delivered"). It is a heroic story of battle and love set in the time of the First Crusade (1096–1099).
At the time of the First Crusade, forces led by Goffredo (Godfrey of Bouillon) are laying siege on Jerusalem which is under the rule of the Saracen king Argante. Aiding Goffredo are his brother Eustazio and Goffredo's daughter Almirena, who is in love with the knight Rinaldo. But Rinaldo is taken hostage by Armida, Argante's ally, who is the Queen of Damascus and a powerful enchantress. >>>WIKI

You need to download both dvds as the third act is on the 2nd dvd, there is also a bonus documentary called "Handel The Entertainer" of an excellent quality justifying that I kept it this time. (English: audio+ subtitles Fr+Ger+ES, not very fair to Italians.)

Official Reviews

This charming production features Lucia Popp's still glorious Pamina and Moll's resonant Sarastro heading a first-rate cast. Brendel's Papageno lightens the recommendation.

My review is that I didn't like it. I found the direction too classical, 60% of the opera to be tossed away absolutely. There are two stories in this opera, Tamino's story and Papageno's one. As much Papageno's story is interesting, light to see and hear, the moralistic, starchy discourse of Tamino and Sarastro is very heavy to digest. The performance of the singers isn't that impressive, though the conducting is impeccable. For my first incursion in Mozartian opera, I'm frankly disappointed. May be I'm more of an Italian or Baroque opera fan and can't taste the German school but I just didn't find it a good experience.

L'Orfeo - Claudio Monteverdi (2002)

L'Orfeo - Claudio Monteverdi (2002)
DVD ISO | 720x576 | MPEG-2 DVD | PCM 2.0, DTS 5.1 Ch | Language: Italian | Subtitles: EN, FR, GER, ES | 140 MIN | 7.26 GB

Artists: Montserrat Figueras, Furio Zanasi, Arianna Savall, Sara Mingardo, Cécile van de Sant...
Production: Gilbert Deflo | Conductor: Jordi Savall | Director: Brian Large | Recording Date: 2002 | Place of recording: Gran Teatro del Liceu (Barcelona)

Jordi Savall is well known in early music circles for combining sound scholarship with high creativity, and this production of L'Orfeo is an example of Savall at his best. The sets and costumes evoke Monteverdi's era well, the choreography is based on the art of the time, and the singing and playing are magnificent. One might have liked a little more dashing Orfeo, but overall this is a refreshing change from the self-indulgent postmodern reinterpretations of Baroque operas one often sees. If you like L'Orfeo, you'll probably like this production.
