Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt, HWV 17) is an Italian opera in three acts written by George Frideric Handel in 1724. The libretto was written by Nicola Francesco Haym.

A Great Moment of Opera:♥♥♥♥♥

There's a chance that purists will be very unhappy with director David McVicar's production of this Baroque masterpiece; there's also an equal chance that they'll be so vastly entertained that all criticisms will be beside the point. Updated to the years before World War I, Caeser's troops are British soldiers come to colonize Egypt, the latter being a place filled with exoticisms in the form of acres of billowing silk, flashy costumes, and full-blown song and dance numbers a la Bollywood (featuring sex-kitten Cleopatra and her minions). It's not only funny/campy, it also makes a certain internal sense. The razzle-dazzle is laid aside for the personal tragedy of Cornelia and Sesto (Patricia Bardon and Angelika Kirchschlager, respectively)--here portrayed as a beaten-down woman in a pathetic rage and a son on the verge of insanity--and for Caeser's and Cleopatra's more introspective moments. Caeser is mezzo Sarah Connelly, in firm voice and with the bearing of an emperor. Cleopatra is the 25-year-old American Daniele de Niese, ravishing in person and voice, with charisma, nerve, and talent in equal proportions. Countertenor Christopher Dumaux' bitchy-queen Tolomeo is remarkable, and the Achilles of bass Christopher Maltman is menacing. William Christie leads the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with great spirit and dramatic thrust, and the production values---subtitles in major European languages and English, stereo and surround sound, and picture---are ideal. Extras include interviews with the director and singers and an up-close look at Danielle de Niese. This is a fascinating, grand entertainment that may just make new friends for Baroque opera. ---Robert Levine

Il Barbiere Di Siviglia - Gioachino Rossini (2004)

Il Barbiere Di Siviglia - Gioachino Rossini (2004)
1 DVD ISO | 720x480 | MPEG-2 DVD | DD 2.0 | Language: Italian | Subtitles: EN, FR, GER, ES | 154 MIN | 7.31 GB
Artists: Maria Ewing, John Rawnsley, Max René Cossotti, Claudio Desderi, Catherine McCord...
Stage and set: John Cox |Conductor: Sylvain Camberling | Direction: Dave Heather | Recording Date: 1987 | Place of recording: Glyndebourne Festival Opera

All the ingredients for Rossini's prime comedy are present and expertly mixed in this 1987 Glyndebourne Festival Opera production: a Figaro (John Rawnsley) extroverted, ingenious, energetic, and vocally resplendent; a Rosina (Maria Ewing) fresh and sweet but steel-sinewed in her determination to have her own way; a Count Almaviva (Max-Rene Cosotti) who has not only the vocal lightness and agility his bel canto music requires, but a fine sense of humor and the ability to perform a good drunk scene. Ferruccio Furlanetto and Claudio Desderi are equally adept in their supporting buffo roles.
This production is a joy to the eye as well as the ear. Everybody looks right for his or her part; the costumes are elegant and evocative of the story's time and place; the scenery, indoors and out, will evoke Seville for anyone who has seen that unique city. It is all brought together and given point and perspective by Sylvain Cambreling's idiomatic conducting and John Cox's deft staging.

Die Fledermaus - Johann Strauss II (2008)

Die Fledermaus - Johann Strauss II (2008)
2 DVD ISO | 720x480 | MPEG-2 DVD | LPCM 2.0, DTS 5.1 | Language: German | Subtitles: EN, FR, NL, ES | 159 MIN | 11.46 GB

Artists: Pamela Armstrong, Thomas Allen, Pär Lindskog, Lyubov Petrova, Udo Samel, Glyndebourne Chorus, London Philharmonic...
Stage direction: Stephen Lawless | Conductor: Vladimir Jurowski | Recording Date: 2003 | Place of recording: Glyndebourne Opera Festival

Johann Strauss II's wonderfully convoluted and ingenious Viennese farce Die Fledermaus is a masterpiece of operetta. The tale spins waltz-like around the philandering Von Eisenstein (Thomas Allen), his wife Rosalinde (Pamela Armstrong), who is tempted by singing teacher Alfred (Par Lindskog), and Adele (Lyubov Petrova), Rosalinde's maid. Following Shakespeare's romantic comedy template there is much mistaken identity, confusion of purpose and cross-dressing, with the events unfolding around an increasingly drunken masked ball and the morning after in the local jail. The champagne-fuelled entertainment carries various satiric undertones, but this adaptation by director Stephen Lawless and Daniel Dooner emphasises colour, wit and flamboyance, always ensuring the jokes work well for a modern audience.

The production requires acting as strong as the excellent singing, and Thomas Allen delivers a subtly layered interpretation of Eisenstein, while Pamela Armstrong's Rosalinde offers a winning study in smouldering sensuality, well contrasted with Lyubov Petrova's more directly sexual Adele. The revolving set mirrors the swirling Strauss dances and the elegant design is a perfect match for the boldly extrovert costumes. If this Glyndebourne 2003 production doesn't match Dame Joan Sutherland's retirement performance at the Royal Opera House in 1977 for historic value, it is easily as much fun and the production values are second to none.

An unmissable moment of delight and wonder!♥♥♥♥♥
