Ivan the Terrible - Prokofiev (2005)

Ivan the Terrible - Prokofiev (2005)
1 DVD ISO | 720x480 | MPEG-2 DVD | PCM 2.0, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 | Language: French | 88 MIN | 7.07 GB
Artists: Nicolas Le Riche, Karl Paquette, Eleonora Abbagnato, , Paris Opera Ballet ...
Choreography: Yuri Grigorovich | Music: Sergei Prokofiev | Conductor : Vello Pahn | Direction: Thomas Grimm | December 2003 , Opéra National de Paris

Ivan the Terrible might be terrible, but Nicolas Le Riche in the central role was magnificent, as were both the casts I saw at the Opéra Bastille. More Bolshoi than the Bolshoi at their peak, the French company, particularly the principals, threw themselves heart and soul into Iouri Grigorovitch's blockbuster of the Soviet era. Proving once again that a bad ballet performed by exceptional dancers can not only be acceptable, but even hugely enjoyable.

Coppélia -Léo Delibes (2001)

Coppélia -Léo Delibes (2001)
1 DVD ISO | 720x576 | MPEG-2 DVD | LPCM 2.0 | Language: French | Subtitles: EN, FR, GER, ES | 73 MIN | 3.52 GB
Artists: Nerses Boyadjian, Francoise Joullie, Josu Zabala, Maria Brown and dancers of Lyon National Opera Ballet...
Choreography : Maguy Marin | Conductor: Kent Nagano | TV Direction : Yorgos Loukos, Thomas Grimm | 1994 , Pierre Bénite, Lyon

The story of Coppélia concerns a mysterious and faintly diabolical inventor, Doctor Coppélius who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village swain, is infatuated with it, and sets aside his true heart's desire, Swanhilde, who in Act II shows him his folly by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life. The festive wedding-day divertissements in the village square that occupy Act III are often deleted in modern danced versions, though one of the entrées was the first czardas presented on a ballet stage. If Mary Shelley's Frankenstein represents the dark side of the theme of scientist as creator of life, then Coppelia is the light side. If Giselle is a tragedy set in a peasant village, then Coppélia is a comedy in the same setting.

Cursive II: A Ballet By Lin-Hwai Min (2006)

Cursive II: A Ballet By Lin-Hwai Min (2006)
MKV 720x400 | H264 1600 kbps | Audio DTS 5.1 | Language: English | Subtitles: EN, FR, ES, IT, GER | Ballet | 147 MIN | 1.91 GB
Artists: Paul Carter, Paul Ghiselin, Fernando Medina Galego, Raffaelle Morra, Joseph Jeffries...
Choreography : Lin-Hwai Min | Music: John Cage | TV Direction : Ross Mac Gibbon | 2005 , Bâtiment des forces mobiles, Geneva

Cursive II is a masterpiece by Lin Hwai-min, choreographer of the highly acclaimed Moon Water and Bamboo Dream. Inspired by the aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy, this work is both commanding and seductive. The superb Cloud Gate (Taïwan) dancers, trained in meditation, Chi-Kung and martial arts, touch you with original movements, fierce as striking thunder or soft as flowing ink on rice paper. The complexity of energy is further enhanced by the music of John Cage, while the blown-up images of ‘ice crackles’ from Sung porcelain shimmer with delicate beauty. This production exquisitely filmed by dance expert Ross MacGibbon captures the meditative aura of the dance. It excites. It mesmerizes. You can never turn away an eye for one second.

The Trocks are a treasure that every ballet lover should see at least once live. If you know and love ballet, you'll howl with laughter at the witty parody-on-pointe that these remarkable men do. If you know nothing about ballet, you will howl with laughter at their comedic turns. If I were to be stuck with only five ballet DVDs ever, two of them would be the Trocks disks.

Josephs Legende - Richard Strauss (2007)

Josephs Legende - Richard Strauss (2007)
1 DVD ISO+ booklet | 720x480 | MPEG-2 DVD | LPCM, DTS 5.1 | Language: None | 65 MIN | 3.88 GB
Artists:Judith Jamison, Kevin Haigen, Franz Musil, Franz Wilhelm...
Choreography and direction : John Neumeier | Costumes: Ernst Fuchs | Conductor: Heinrich Hollreiser | Recording Date: 1977 | Place of recording: Vienna State Opera Ballet

An oddity in Richard Strauss's output is his only ballet, The Legend of Joseph, written in 1912 on a commission from Diaghalev for Ballet Russe. It tells the biblical story of Potiphar's wife attempting to seduce Joseph, not much of a scenario but it does give Strauss an opportunity to write lush, colorful music, scored for a huge orchestra including four harps, six horns and lots of percussion. DGG offers a film based on a production by the Vienna State Opera. Interestingly, the filming was done at Wien-Film June 13-14, 1977, the music recorded August 1-18, 1977 in the same location—one would expect both would be done at the same time. The production is colorful, the dancing excellent, particularly Judith Jamison, of Alvin Ailey fame, as Potiphar's Wife. The Vienna Philharmonic is perfectly at home in this repertory, with Heinrich Hollreiser in firm control at the helm.

Orpheus und Eurydike - Christoph Willibald Gluck (2008)

Orpheus und Eurydike - Christoph Willibald Gluck (2008)
1 DVD ISO | 720x480 | MPEG-2 DVD | PCM 2.0, DD 5.1 | Language: German | Subtitles: EN, FR, GER, IT, ES | 104 MIN | 6.81 GB

Artists: Julia Kleiter, Marie-Agnès Gillot, Sunhae Im, Maria Riccarda Wesseling, Yann Bridard...
Choreography : Pina Bausch | Conductor: Thomas Hengelbrock | TV Direction : Vincent Bataillon | Recording Date: Février 2008 | Place of recording: Palais Garnier, Paris
