MC 14/22 'Ceci est mon corps' (Mark 14:22 'This is my body'), a celebration of the male form, sees twelve male dancers (Preljocaj's `Apostles of Movement') affirming their masculinity and their basic existence by offering up their bodies unequivocally to both each other and the audience. Although the music is quite minimalist and the movement on stage is somewhat mechanical at times, I found my pulse racing due to the contrasting moments of desire and intense sensuality.
Le Songe de Médée, the second of the performances, is based on the Greek myth of Medea and tells of a woman who will do anything for love. The choreography successfully conveys the struggle that Preljocaj believes is present in all women who are mothers: the difficulty to fulfil the role of both mother and lover. Eleonora Abbagnato illuminates the stage with her performance, and the unpredictable score reflects the inner conflict Médée feels striving to choose between being a mother and being her husband's mistress. This DVD is not only an absolute must-watch for lovers of all styles of dance, but also great for anyone who, like me, doesn't know much about the art form. I was moved by both pieces and enjoyed being challenged by the themes they present.
