Finito!

For I no longer have time and won't be available for uploading and have other priorities in life, no longer uploads will be done. May be sometimes I will do them, but not regularly and it's not a sure fact. What's sure is that it won't be on rapidshare which now cannot be afforded by any normal person, so that's it. Dialogues Des Carmelites - Francis Poulenc (2010)

L'action se situe à Paris et à Compiègne. Elle débute en avril 1789. Blanche de la Force annonce à son père son intention d'entrer au Carmel. La mère supérieure du couvent de Compiègne la reçoit et lui demande d'exposer les raisons qui la poussent à rejoindre cet ordre religieux. Devenue novice, Blanche va vivre les derniers jours de la congrégation mise à mal par la Révolution française. La troupe envahit le couvent, mais Blanche réussit à s'échapper. Les ordres religieux sont supprimés et les religieuses sont condamnées à mort. Elles montent à l'échafaud en chantant le Salve Regina. Après bien des hésitations, des doutes sur sa raison d'être, Blanche les rejoint.

The opera Dialogues of the Carmelites is the only opera the French composer Francis Poulenc has ever written. It is based on the screenplay Die begnadigte Angst by Georges Bernanos. The material for the opera is based on actual historic events. Poulenc converges religion and revolution: The young Blanche de la Force who suffers from existential fear all life long, escapes into a convent hoping to conquer her paralysing fear of life and death. Even the walls of the convent cannot stop the French Revolution. The nuns of the Carmelite Order fail to resist it and accept to die in martyrdom. Fascinated by their constancy finally Blanche overcomes her angst and follows her sisters to the scaffold.

This dramatic opera in three acts had its debut performance at La Scala in Milan in 1957. With its religious theme this opera takes a special position in the theatre of music in the 20th century. Poulencs clear and insistent musical language is perfectly interpreted by conductor Simone Young and the Philharmoniker Hamburg. This production showcases big, vibrant voices from all age categories who are not only brilliant in singing but also in acting. Besides the great musical performance, the main reason for the huge success of the opera is stage director Nikolaus Lehnhoff. His simplistic stage design together with the mystic light installation this opera guarantees great listening and also an amazing viewing pleasure.

Rolando Villazón, une soirée à Berlin (12/09/2010)

Le charisme d'un Placido Domingo et le physique irrésistible d'un jeune premier : Rolando Villazón est l'un des rares chanteurs classiques à avoir l'étoffe d'une star. "Maestro" vous propose d'entendre les temps forts d'un récital qu'il a donné à Berlin en 2005. Villazón interprète des airs de Verdi, Puccini et Donizetti, des zarzuelas espagnoles et latino-américaines. En prime, un petit tour dans les coulisses, juste avant le concert, où le ténor répond à ses courriels, reçoit l'ambassadeur mexicain et lance des contre-ut pour se chauffer la voix.

Ivan the Terrible - Prokofiev (2005)

Ivan the Terrible might be terrible, but Nicolas Le Riche in the central role was magnificent, as were both the casts I saw at the Opéra Bastille. More Bolshoi than the Bolshoi at their peak, the French company, particularly the principals, threw themselves heart and soul into Iouri Grigorovitch's blockbuster of the Soviet era. Proving once again that a bad ballet performed by exceptional dancers can not only be acceptable, but even hugely enjoyable.

Blanche Neige - Angelin Preljocaj (2010)

Parenthèse féerique et enchantée, ce spectacle ravive notre goût des histoires. Sur des symphonies de Malher, dont les débordements magnifiques sont d’essence romantique, les 26 danseurs costumés par Jean Paul Gaultier composent un grand ballet contemporain. Globe de cristal du meilleur spectacle de danse 2009.

Sangre - Amat Escalante (2005)

Regarder des telenovelas sur le canapé ou faire l'amour sur la table de la cuisine : tel est le quotidien de Diego, fonctionnaire, et son épouse Blanca, employée dans un fast-food. Un jour débarque Karina, la fille que Diego a eue d'un premier mariage. L'homme doit alors faire face au besoin d'affection de sa fille et aux crises de jalousie de sa femme. Un événement extraordinaire le poussera à agir comme il ne l'avait encore jamais fait.

Diego's job is counting people as they enter a large government building. After work, he and his wife Blanca lie on the couch....

Bach Performance on the Piano - Angela Hewitt (2008)

Hyperion produced this two-disc DVD set as part of Miss Hewitt's 07/08 Bach World Tour (bachworldtour). It is shot on location at the Fazioli piano factory in Italy (Hewitt highly favors these pianos). Even if you are purely a listener, this nicely done production will take you to a new depth of discovery and appreciation into the legendary music of Bach and Angela Hewitt.

Disc 1 (148 min) is instructional with Hewitt demonstrating various techniques, strategies and advice in 7 chapters (see list below). I suppose it is something akin to her Bach master's classes. She uses numerous musical motiff examples from the WTC and much of Bach's keyboard repertoire to show what she means. These alone are endlessly fascinating to watch the pianist's ease, fluidity and nuance. She often compares to how an amatuer would play it ... and of course how the she would approach it. One is immediately impressed with Hewitt's love and discipline with this music. She is also a great educator, weaving both technical detail and personal stories in the lessons. The camera work is quite good, showing at a slight angle from the right the keyboard work of both hands up close. Up this close, you can see just how strong her steel-spring-like fingers are for playing Bach like she does! Of course she makes it look effortlessly.

Disc 2 (62 minutes) is a live performance at the Fazioli factory auditorium - where of course she plays an absolutely gorgeous Fazioli Concert Grand. These pianos are noted for their super-fast action, complex yet brilliant and clear harmonics and the addition of a special, forth pedal for enhanced dynamic shading. Of course she makes Bach sing and sound beautiful on it. The camera work again is good allowing one to see most of the action unhindered, although at times of sections of fast passagework (like in the chromatic fantasy/fugue) the camera is more on the pianist than the keyboard. The sound is rich and full as is her playing, making for an impressive concert.

Considéré très rapidement comme un instrument de la propagande nazie, l’opéra a permis à Hitler de magnifier la grandeur, l’héroïsme et le sens du devoir allemands. Basé sur des images tournées par ou pour les Nazis entre 1933 et 1944, ce documentaire analyse la façon dont ont été détournés certains personnages allégoriques des opéras de Wagner et de la mythologie pour en faire des symboles de l'idéologie du national-socialisme.

Coppélia -Léo Delibes (2001)

Le livret met en scène Swanilda, son fiancé Frantz et le vieux Coppélius, fabricant de poupées automates, dont l'ambition est d'en créer une douée d'une âme. Frantz s'éprend de la dernière création du vieillard, entrevue par la fenêtre : Coppélia qu'il croit vivante. Swanilda, jalouse s'introduit dans son atelier. Frantz y pénètre à son tour, surpris par Coppélius qui tente à l'aide d'un breuvage de sa composition de l'endormir pour lui ravir son âme. C'est alors que Coppélia s'anime, et pour cause : Swanilda a pris la place de la poupée. Elle brise les automates et s'enfuit avec son fiancé qu'elle épousera à la fête du village.

The story of Coppélia concerns a mysterious and faintly diabolical inventor, Doctor Coppélius who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village swain, is infatuated with it, and sets aside his true heart's desire, Swanhilde, who in Act II shows him his folly by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life. The festive wedding-day divertissements in the village square that occupy Act III are often deleted in modern danced versions, though one of the entrées was the first czardas presented on a ballet stage. If Mary Shelley's Frankenstein represents the dark side of the theme of scientist as creator of life, then Coppelia is the light side. If Giselle is a tragedy set in a peasant village, then Coppélia is a comedy in the same setting.

Serse - G-F Haendel (2005)

Serse (Xerxes, HWV 40) is an opera seria in three acts by George Frideric Handel. It was first performed in London on 15 April 1738. The libretto is adapted by an unknown hand from that by Silvio Stampiglia for an earlier opera of the same name by Giovanni Bononcini in 1694. Stampiglia's libretto was itself based on one by Nicolò Minato that was set by Francesco Cavalli in 1654. The opera is set in Persia in 480 BC and is very loosely based upon Xerxes I of Persia, though there is little in either the libretto or music that is relevant to that setting. Xerxes, originally sung by a castrato, is now generally performed by a mezzosoprano or countertenor.

Une des dernières compositions de Haendel dans le domaine de l'opéra, Serse est considéré comme le plus « mozartien » et l'un des meilleurs qu'il ait composés. La passion s'y mêle à la farce et à la satire - en ce sens, il s'éloigne de l'opera seria typique mis au point par Apostolo Zeno et Métastase ; la folie de la nature humaine y est montrée mais jamais ridiculisée.
L'action se passe dans l'Empire Perse en 480 avant J.-C. et se fonde quelque peu sur l'histoire de l'empereur Xerxès. Il y a cependant peu de rapports réels entre l'Histoire et le livret ou sa musique. Le rôle-titre Xerxès était chanté par un castrat ; c'est généralement aujourd'hui un rôle travesti, c'est à dire un rôle masculin chanté par une femme à la tessiture de mezzo-soprano.

David Fray: J.S. Bach - Swing, Sing and Think (2009)

Fray est l’un des rares pianistes de la nouvelle génération à avoir signé en exclusivité avec une major (Virgin Classics) à la suite d’un unique concert donné au Théâtre du Châtelet en juin 2006. Ce soir-là, il avait remplacé au pied levé Hélène Grimaud.

Fort judicieusement la caméra de Bruno Monsaingeon auquel on doit de nombreux documents sur Glenn Gould, accompagne le jeune interprète au cours des séances d'enregistrement: explications et commentaires face aux partitions, préparations et répétitions préalables... Il en découle un cycle filmé intitulé "Swing, Sing & Think", qui raconte sa quête d’une interprétation personnelle de ces œuvres à qui Glenn Gould a imprimé sa marque. Un document captivant pour tenter de mieux cerner ce pianiste de 27 ans et entendre (et voir !) ses réponses face à la partition de Bach…
